We write to you at a critical moment for global development. Over the past weeks we’ve watched with growing alarm the dismantling of USAID and the devastating effects this is already having, particularly in the fragile regions of Haiti and Uganda that we serve. It comes at a time when food insecurity, violence, and economic instability are worsening.
While we are deeply concerned, we remain steadfast in our mission. Using an inclusive, community-led model, Partners In Progress (PIP) and our community partners continue advancing innovative solutions to development priorities, while providing critical emergency aid to those in need.
This is a pivotal moment when your support can make a lasting difference. Your donation today is critical to saving lives and making it possible for communities to continue building for a better future.

THE IMPACT OF USAID’S WITHDRAWAL
USAID has historically been a significant provider of funding for food security, health initiatives, and economic development. Although PIP itself does not receive USAID funding, communities in Haiti and Uganda do. The abrupt loss of this vital support is putting additional pressure on the resources in those communities. This is some of what we are witnessing:
Escalating Hunger in Haiti
4 million people are facing acute food insecurity. Cessation of critical USAID food aid programs is leaving communities more vulnerable than ever. We expect the rates of acute hunger and child malnutrition to skyrocket over the next few months.
Continued Flow of Arms to Haiti
The illegal flow of guns and ammunition from the U.S. into Haiti continues to go largely unchecked. Rising violence, combined with escalating hunger, has forced an estimated 60,000 to flee their homes in the past month alone. The U.N. estimates that one in eight children are now displaced. Our partners report new waves of refugees from Haiti’s capital and beyond settling in the areas PIP serves.
Economic Struggles in Uganda
Uganda, which has relied on USAID to support rural agriculture development, is now facing reduced or eliminated access to financial and technical support for smallholder farmers, who produce 80 percent of the country’s food.
COMMUNITY-LED DEVELOPMENT UPDATES
Over the past decade and a half, we’ve witnessed the power of diverse voices and communities sharing ideas and resources for creating innovative local solutions to some of the toughest development challenges on the planet. This has resulted in sustained improvements in education, food security, health, biodiversity, housing, and economy. Resilience and capacity for cooperative planning and action have also increased in our partner communities.
Communities are less vulnerable to — even helping reduce — climate change. In Haiti, partner communities have led relief efforts in response to multiple crises over the last four years. Here are some updates:
In Haiti
- FAFSI farmers in the L’Artibonite and Centre departments reported strong fall harvests of corn, beans, millet, cassava, yams, and many different vegetables — contributing to food relief for displaced families.
- 204 farmers transitioned to agroecology in the past year, with help of FAFSI farmers.
- The School of St. Antoine has remained open throughout the 2024-25 school year.
- Phase II of the cooperative Building Home pilot is underway in Savanette Cabral and Vye Kay.
In Uganda
- 73 percent of new FAFSI farmers increased production of traditional food crops by 40% or more with agroecology.
- A new market stand was constructed and opened in Zombo District, improving access to healthy foods and farmer livelihoods.
- 28 single mothers and young adult farmers completed financial literacy training, with 11 opening bank accounts for the first time.
Collective Impact
- Farmers in Haiti and Uganda surpassed half million trees planted!
THANK YOU! YOUR PARTNERSHIP IS MORE VITAL THAN EVER
At a time when international funding and resources are being reduced or eliminated; community-led approaches to development are more vital than ever. We are grateful for your support and hope that you will continue to stand with us, our partners, and the communities they serve as we navigate this evolving landscape.
