Dear Friends,
This is an urgent call for help to support emergency food relief for displaced families and vital farmer-led agroecology initiatives for rebuilding food sovereignty in rural Haiti.
You’ve likely been following the news and know that the security in the country has deteriorated dramatically since the beginning of March. The prime minister has resigned. Gang attacks on police stations, prisons, the airport, and main sea port, along with gang control of roads and transportation, have brought the country to the brink of collapse. This has further interrupted the already tenuous flow of food, medical supplies, and other desperately needed aid in Port-Au-Prince and ever greater areas of the country.
In the midst of this spiraling situation, our team and those of our community-based partners have remained safe and are hard at work. While news reports focus on the country’s capital, rural areas have also been affected. Several partner communities have become safe havens for some of the 362,000 persons displaced by unprecedented violence. In Deslandes, Fondwa, Layaye, Papaye and Savanette Cabral, our team, partners and farmers of Konbit Vanyan Kapab Farmer-to-Farmer Agroecology for Food Sovereignty Initiative (FAFSI), are providing urgently needed food relief those displaced by violence. So far, 610 families (3,530 individuals) have benefitted from these distributions of locally sourced healthy foods.
In addition to responding to staggering humanitarian crisis, our team and partners continue providing education and other basic services, advancing agroecology innovations for revitalizing local food systems across three departments in Haiti. The ability to provide healthy food — in a way that is good for people and the earth — is the foundation for building lasting biodiversity, health, prosperity, resilience, and peace.
There are few places on earth in so much need. Even before this dire and deteriorating situation, half of Haiti’s 11 million residents were already experiencing acute hunger. I hope you will continue to stand with our community-based partners, FAFSI farmers, and other community members, to help them care for the thousands displaced by violence while continuing their vital work to ensure a better future for all. Please consider making a donation to Partners In Progress.
