As you gather around your tables this holiday season, and think about those less fortunate, please remember our friends in rural Haiti. Right now, your help and prayers are urgently needed to address dire and escalating food insecurity.
Over 5.2 million Haitians, nearly half of the population, are experiencing acute hunger. In rural parts of the country, the problem is compounded the influx of people seeking refuge from violence in and around Port-Au-Prince and in parts of the L’Artibonite. The UN estimates that 200,000 Haitians have already been displaced and the number grows daily.
Farmers of the Farmer-to-Farmer Agroecology for Food Sovereignty Initiative (FAFSI) and our community-based partners continue to respond to this crisis, but they need YOUR help! In just the first two weeks of December, this community-led food relief has so far provided healthy food for 217 families (1,002 children and adults) displaced by the violence in Haiti.
Families flee to rural areas with nothing but each other and what they can carry. We know the people in rural communities are sharing what they have, but severe inflation and climate impacts are driving extreme shortages of food in many communities.
The need is growing. Our partners in Deslandes, Fondwa, and Layaye report an additional 490 families — an estimated 2,800 people – in neighboring communities are in desperate need of emergency food assistance. Additional resources and funding are critical to these efforts.
By responding with a gift right now you will be making a powerful impact that addresses the urgent need for food, while advancing food sovereignty and long-term food security.
Your gift today will:
Provide nutritious, traditional Haitian foods to families in need.
Support local economies as 95% of food is sourced locally from FAFSI and other farmers.
Rebuild local food systems, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change through innovations in regenerative agroecology and reforestation being led by FAFSI farmers.
The goal of PIP, FAFSI farmers, and community-based partners is to raise $5,000 to support community-led food relief. Thanks to a gift from a generous supporter, your donation will be DOUBLED.
