Partners in Progress works with local partners in rural Haiti and Uganda to collaboratively build sustainable community assets. PIP principally aims to elevate access to quality educational
opportunities, facilitate food sovereignty and agricultural innovation, and assist local residents in expanding self-sufficiency to meet their basic needs. We are unique in our community-driven approach toward meeting these goals: we emphasize consideration of local knowledge and values, experiential learning and skill development, inclusive decision-making, and refinement of our work in response to the lessons we learn and share. This approach results in building sustainable capacities for our community partners to cooperatively plan and execute projects they prioritize, continuously innovate, and resiliently overcome obstacles.
An illustrative example of Partners in Progress’ successful model is the response of our Haitian partners to the earthquake in August 2021. Through the Konbit Vanyan Kapab Farmer-to-Farmer
Agroecology For Food Sovereignty Initiative (or FAFSI), farmers have been able to increase yield and diversity of food crops, producing more food for household consumption and sale at markets. Increased farm production and capacity for self-organizing has enabled farmers to have a leadership role in crisis response. After the earthquake, 52 of these farmers from eight villages provided large amounts of beans, corn, Artibonite rice, and peanuts for food relief. They helped stage and package 26,600 pounds of food and other supplies for affected communities. Farmers helped earthquake-affected farmers by providing cover crop seeds and technical guidance to rebuild soils and restore local ecosystems damaged by the earthquake and ensuing flooding and mudslides. As Ancelot Faustin, a farmer who supported these earthquake response efforts, said “I feel so happy to be able to help. I didn’t think I could do something like this.” Many Haitians face an array of significant economic and social challenges; our partners are developing the skills, confidence, and experience to help meet them.
